Online poker it’s actually illegal in the U.S. we all know that. It came as a bit of a surprise, then, when Yahoo launched a new site called Yahoo Poker. The site’s not for kiddies, and it’s not a joke; players will use real money.
Euros and British pounds are the only eligible forms of money, however, as Yahoo Poker is being offered through the company’s site for the UK and Ireland. Players resident in the USA are not currently accepted at Yahoo Poker.
Yahoo has brought more than a few friends into this endeavor, however; St Minver, which “offers fully managed ‘white label’ gaming services,” is a partner, Sam Mann’s photo is visible throughout the site, and Springboard has stepped forward to act as the sole payment provider.
That brings us to another issue - how does Yahoo plan to approach the potentially destructive nature of online poker? Addiction has caused some people to lose their homes and families, but the search engine corporation stated, “We are committed to taking every reasonable step to discourage problem gambling. Our systems are designed to reduce the opportunities for problem gambling to occur.”
In a hard-to-find “Responsible Gaming” section of the site, Yahoo explains, “We place monetary limits on the amounts that can be deposited in any one day/week/month,” and there are a number of other systems in place, as well. Yahoo even points out a connection to GamCare, “the charity committed to promoting responsible attitudes towards gambling and working for the provision of proper care for those harmed by gambling dependency.”
It seems unlikely that those precautions will satisfy every critic; Yahoo Poker may create more than a bit of controversy. It’ll be very interesting to see, though, just how much time, energy, and money Yahoo puts into this project - and if Google Blackjack launches next week.

eCommerce and Online Gambling Regulation and Assurance (eCOGRA) has become one of the first organisations to be approved by the Minister responsible for Gambling of the Government of Gibraltar for purposes of testing and certifying the integrity of online gambling equipment and software used by Gibraltar’s licensees in compliance with the Gambling Act 2005.
Already the standard bearer for monitoring fair gaming, service and operator conduct, eCOGRA recently introduced a dedicated team of experts to provide even more extensive evaluation and data analysis for online gaming operators, the “Total Gaming Transaction Review.” Earlier this year, eCOGRA appointed a high powered and professionally qualified specialist team with a cumulative total of 18 years’ experience to operate the TGTR process, providing the most comprehensive data verification service available to online gambling operators to date.
Included in the service, among other things, are onsite software audits to ensure best practice standards and continual monitoring and verification of all data, including payout percentages and random number generation.
This week, eCOGRA has announced, the Total Gaming Transaction Review has been extensively evaluated by Gibraltar authorities and approved for testing and certifying Gibraltar’s gambling industry licensees.
“We are delighted,” says eCOGRA CEO Andrew Beveridge, “that a regulator of the calibre of the GRA has accepted this advanced process after intensive study.
“Our testing principles and methodologies have now been recognized by several other international jurisdictions concerned with protecting players through the professional and continuous testing of online casino and poker room operators.”
To date, 115 sites comply with eCOGRA requirements and have been awarded the coveted “Play It Safe” seal that identifies to players the safest online gambling sites on the Web.

Three payment-processors have been accused of miscoding gaming transactions and funneling that money to online casinos and sportsbooks in grand jury indictments unsealed last week in Utah.
The companies, along with BetUS.com, have been charged with money laundering, bank fraud, racketeering conspiracy and violation of the wire act.
The indictment also alleges that at least on U.S. bank official had been bribed to ensure that the transactions were mislabeled.
The 34-count indictment alleges BetUS used Hill Financial Services and Gateway Technologies in Utah and CurrenC and CurrenC Worldwide in the British Virgin Islands, to deceive credit card companies into believing more than $150 million in U.S.-based transactions were not tied to online gambling. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, adopted in October, made it illegal for U.S. financial institutions to process online gaming transactions.
The U.S. Attorney is attempting to recover the $150 million under RICO, the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations law.
The IRS led the investigation into payment processors.
Seven people were charged in the indictment in addition to the four companies. Baron Lombardo, 46, Richard Carson-Selman, 51, Henry G. Bankey, 49, Francisco Lombardo, 52, Count C. Lombardo, 43, Tina I. Hill, 32, and Kimberlie Lombardo 43 are all Las Vegas residents. Baron, Francisco, and Count Lombardo are brothers and Kimberlie and Francisco Lombardo are married.
None of the defendants are in custody because they are not considered flight risks, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. Richard Carson-Selman is the only person to be arrested. He was taken into custody May 10 in Las Vegas, but was released after an initial appearance in Las Vegas under the supervision of pre-trial services.
All of the defendants are scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, May 30, at 10 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Warner.
Maximum penalties include 20-years for racketeering conspiracy, 30 years for bank fraud, two-years for transmission of wagers/wagering information, and 20-years for money laundering.
