The ban was initiated by the state’s Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division, a division of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS). The division cited a 1961 federal anti-gambling law, the state’s Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division claims that all online gambling conducted within state borders is illegal, even if the games are hosted outside the United States. The division had instructed 11 national and regional telephone and Internet service providers (ISPs) to block access by all Minnesota-based computers to nearly 200 gambling websites.

Statements from several bodies including the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming (iMEGA) lobby group and the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) were quickly released regarding the illegality of the move. In addition, iMEGA wrote to the 11 ISPs last month telling them to ignore the order, and filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Minneapolis against the Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division’s director John Willems.

Simultaneously, Minnesota State Rep. Pat Garofalo introduced legislation to prevent the division from enforcing the ban. His bill also asked that legislative approval be necessary in any similar or future ban attempts.

If there was any question regarding Jeffrey Lisandro’s Seven-Card Stud abilities, all doubt was erased on Tuesday, June 9, at the 2009 WSOP.

Lisandro entered the final table of Event 16 $1,500 Seven-Card Stud as one of the favorites but he had to contend with skilled players like John Juanda and Nick Frangos in his bracelet-winning attempt.

Lisandro proved to be more than any of the players could handle and after a brief heads-up battle against Rod Pardey, he earned his second Seven-Card Stud WSOP bracelet. Lisandro also picked up a cool $124,959 for his efforts.

Southland Tales movies Many people say Isaac “westmenloAA” Baron is the future of poker but that future was delayed at least for awhile on Monday.

Baron came into the final table as one of the chip leaders but was quickly overshadowed by relatively unknown players Fabian Quoss and Brian Lemke. Lemke ended up beating Quoss heads-up to take down the bracelet.

Day 2 of the Championship Omaha-8 event began with 129 players and the seemingly impossible task of setting a final table by the end of the day.

Indeed the final table proved to be a pipe dream for WSOP organizers and by the time 3 a.m. rolled around there were still 17 players remaining. Organizers decided to bring them all back tomorrow and play all the way down to a winner.

The event was stacked with well-known pros like Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu all in the running.

Unfortunately Hellmuth and Ivey were eliminated before the end of the day but Negreanu, Annie Duke, Alexander Kravchenko, Daniel Alaei and several others still remain. Perhaps most impressive is Finn Ville Wahlbeck who is within striking distance of another bracelet just days after winning his first one.

There usually ain’t that many recognizable players by the time the final table of the ladies event is set and that was certainly the case at this year’s event.

Six-handed poker is always action-packed and Day 1 of Event 19 was certainly that. The event drew 1,068 runners to start the day but by 2 a.m. only 288 remained.

It is way too early to even start to pick favorites in the event but Erick Lindgren, Layne Flack and Humberto Brenes all built sizable stacks.

Statement Regarding UltimateBet Scandal

With the cloud of cheating scandal still hovering over UltimateBet, The Kahnawáke Gaming Commission (KGC) — which licenses both UltimateBet and Absolute Poker — released a statement Wednesday updating its progress on the investigation into UltimateBet, which along with Absolute Poker is owned by Tokwiro Enterprises ENRG. The owner of Tokwiro Enterprises is Joe Norton, former Grand Chief of the Kahnawáke.

The KGC admits in its press release that its actions were not “well communicated to the poker industry or public at large” and says it is attempting to dispel an “incorrect perception” that it was “doing nothing” in the wake of a second cheating scandal within the last year.
The cheating allegations, which surfaced in January, marked the second time in less than a year that a Tokwiro property has had to investigate unfair play at of its poker rooms. In January, the KGC fined Tokwiro’s Absolute Poker $500,000 after it was revealed players with “superuser” accounts that could see hole cards of opponents had cheated. And this past May, UltimateBet’s owners, Tokwiro Enterprises ENRG, admitted UltimateBet’s security had been breached by former employees and accounts with access to opponent’s hole cards were used to cheat in high-stakes games.

“The investigation has concluded that certain player accounts did in fact have an unfair advantage, and that these accounts targeted the highest limit games on the site,” UltimateBet said in a statement. “The individuals responsible were found to have worked for the previous ownership of UltimateBet prior to the sale of the business to Tokwiro in October 2006. Tokwiro is taking full responsibility for this situation and will immediately begin refunding UltimateBet customers for any losses that were incurred as a result of unfair play. “The fraudulent activity was enabled by unauthorized software code that allowed the perpetrators to obtain hole card information during live play. The existence of this vulnerability was unknown to Tokwiro until February 2008 and existed prior to UltimateBet’s acquisition by Tokwiro in October 2006. Our investigation has confirmed that the code was part of a legacy auditing system that was manipulated by the perpetrators. Gaming Associates, independent auditors hired by the KGC, have confirmed that the software code that provided the unfair advantage has been permanently removed.” In separate press releases in June and July, UltimateBet admitted that more accounts than were originally announced in May were part of the cheating scandal, and moved to refund money to affected players.
