32 teams are gone and 32 remain in the NCAA Basketball Dance to fight it out for a chance to play next weekend.

The story of the NCAA Basketball tournament so far has been the upsets. Where are they? Besides three of the four No. 9 seeds beating the No. 8 seeds, there have only been two real upsets: the Winthrop Eagles over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Virginia Commonwealth Rams over the Duke Blue Devils.

Will both Winthrop and VCU continue their postseason runs with another and move on to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, or will the favorites continue to roll? What will be the key factors in today’s games? Who will win and who will cover?

NCAA Basketball Bracket Tips

When filling out an NCAA bracket, there are many things to keep in mind. We certainly can’t claim to be perfect — no one is. As experienced bracket pickers know, filling out a bracket sheet can certainly give new meaning to the words March Madness! But here is some information that should be useful.

Some thing to consider while playing NCAA Basketball bracket

1. Overall Performance
The best measure of overall performance is definitely our NCAA basketball Power Ratings. Power Ratings take everything into account: home, away, margin of victory, won/lost, recent games, etc. In short, Power Ratings provide the best measurement of how good a team really is.

2. Recent Play
Some NCAA Tournament teams were lousy in November and great in February. Other basketball teams were great in February but lousy in November. If you’re picking a team to go far, the first is probably a lot better than the second. The best way to look at this is to check out the Last Ten Ratings, which give a good indication of who’s playing the best ball right now. Certainly, this isn’t the ONLY factor — slumping teams sometimes miraculously turn things around just in time for the big dance — but it’s a big one.

3. Home-Away-Neutral
There are a handful of teams in the field that have played very well at home, but poorly on the road. Some teams seem to do well at neutral sites. Usually, only being good at home is a bad sign for the NCAA Tournament. To see how teams have played at home and on the road, check out the Away Ratings and the Home Ratings. The Neutral Ratings are probably the best indicator. A warning here, though; many teams have only played two or three games at neutral sites. If that’s the case, don’t overestimate the importance of those games

4. Consistency
Some teams tend to beat the teams they’re supposed to, and lose to the teams they’re supposed to. Others might beat anyone, but might also lose to anyone. One measure for this is a team’s Consistency Rating. If a team has a high consistency rating, they’re less likely to knock off a team ahead of them, but they’re also less likely to get upset.

5. Overall Odds
If you want to win your pool, I wouldn’t advise putting Northwestern State in the Final Four. By looking at the Overall NCAA Tournament Odds, you can get a sense of just how likely it is that your team will make it to a certain spot in the bracket. As we see every year in the conference tournaments and the NCAAs, there are always upsets. But by picking those that are at least moderately likely, the odds of you completely striking out are not as large.

6. Individual Matchups
Rankings certainly can’t express everything in a basketball game. Every team has opponents that it matches up well with, and others that it just doesn’t play well against. For this, I suggest you check out each team’s page, and click on “Results & Scores” to see how that team has fared against different sorts of opponents. One problem here is that most people haven’t seen much of the field of 64, so it’s tough to know about individual matchups.

The XLI Superbowl Story

The Indianapolis Colts clinched the NFL Football title for the first time in 36 years with a 29-17 victory over the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI to the delight of MVP Peyton Manning and coach Tony Dungy.

Manning passed for 247 yards and a touchdown, while rookie Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes combined for 190 rushing yards as the Colts dealt with the wet conditions in Miami better than their opponents.

Tony Dungy became the first black head coach to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the 41 years, while defeating protege Lovie Smith, who worked as his linebackers coach at Tampa Bay from 1996-2000.

Manning completed 25-of-38 passes, including a 53-yard touchdown to Reggie Wayne in the first quarter, while Rhodes recorded his first 100-yard rushing game since 2001, gaining 113 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

Addai added 77 yards on the ground and caught 10 passes for 66 yards.

The Colts’ defence also forced five turnovers, including three by quarterback Rex Grossman.

Cornerback Kelvin Hayden, who replaced injured starter Nick Harper in the second-half, made the biggest defensive play when he intercepted a floating pass by Grossman along the right sideline and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown, opening up a 29-17 lead with 11 minutes 44 seconds remaining.

The Chicago Bears (15-4) were trying to win their first title since 1985 but the NFC’s best defensive team yielded a staggering 430 yards to the Indianapolis Colts.

After Chicago rookie Devin Hester became the first player to return the opening kick-off of a Super Bowl for a touchdown, the Bears were dominated by the Colts.

Indianapolis dominated the line of scrimmage, controlling the ball for 38 minutes and outgaining Chicago 430-265 - during one stretch across half-time, the Colts ran 23 of 24 plays from scrimmage, with the Bears’ only snap resulting in a fumble.

Grossman, who committed 25 turnovers during the regular season, bobbled away a snap in the second quarter and was intercepted by safety Bob Sanders in the final period.

Grossman completed 20-of-28 passes for 165 yards, including a four-yard touchdown to Muhsin Muhammad with 4min 34sec to play in the first quarter, giving the Bears a 14-6 lead.

But the Colts scored the next 16 points as Adam Vinatieri kicked a 29-yard field goal and Rhodes bulled in for a one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Vinatieri, best known for kicking two Super Bowl-winning field goals for the New England Patriots, added field goals of 24 and 20 yards in the third quarter to give the Colts a 22-14 advantage.

Despite outstanding efforts from the two Colts running backs, the award for Manning really was never in doubt. The two-time NFL MVP was 25 of 38 for 247 yards and a touchdown pass, and that was more than enough to clinch the press and fans votes.

The Manning MVP win added another couple of points to the final profits haul.

The Colts are a best price 8/1 to reclaim their new found title, while the Bears are 10s to go one better in twelve months time.

Australian Open 2007 Finals

Australian Open Women’s Final Match

Maria Sharapova, the 2006 US Open champion, will be making her first appearance in an Australian Open final after two losses in the semi-finals, one of them to Willams in 2005.

Serena Williams, unseeded and ranked No81 in the world, made it back to a Grand Slam final for the first time in two years with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Nicole Vaidisova at the Australian Open today.
Williams, who has seven Grand Slam titles to her name, weathered Vaidisova’s powerful forehands and gave back plenty of her own, sometimes surprising the 17-year-old Czech with her speed around the court and the pace of her ball.

The 2005 champion will face the No1 seed, Maria Sharapova ,in the final, after the 19-year-old Russian brushed Kim Clijsters aside 6-4, 6-2 in the second semi-final.

Tomorrow’s women’s final will be a repeat of the 2005 semi-final when Maria Sharapova served for the match twice and Williams staved off three match points. The American went on to win the seventh and last of her grand slam titles, and so badly did she struggle in the early rounds this time that it seemed impossible she would be in a position to add an eighth. But the Williams are a fighting family, with Venus overturning all logic and form to win her third Wimbledon title in 2005. The more the odds are stacked against them, the more determined is the response of the sisters.

Sharapova said she was looking forward to a rematch with Williams. “I’m excited for that. She came into this tournament without any expectations, and she is playing great tennis,” she said. “To be in the final of a Grand Slam, that takes a lot of hard work. She’s won many of these titles - I have a lot to catch up.”

Australian Open Men’s Final Match

Defending champion Roger Federer advanced to the final of the Australian Open on Thursday after easily defeating Andy Roddick in a blockbuster semifinal. Federer will take on Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez in the Australian Open final tomorrow as the favorite to collect his 10th Grand Slam title.

Federer, who appeared in an Open Era-record 11th straight Grand Slam semi, has now won the last eight encounters over Roddick, including six finals, and is a perfect 5-0 versus the American in Grand Slam play. Federer holds a 13-1 advantage overall. The 25-year-old Federer has now won his last 13 matches at the Aussie Open and has captured his last 35 matches overall, dating back to last season, tying his personal record. The victory propelled Federer into his seventh straight Grand Slam final.

Fernando Gonzalez, seeking his first Grand Slam title, beat Tommy Haas in straight sets to set up an Australian Open final against top-ranked Roger Federer.

Having seen off Lleyton Hewitt, James Blake and Raphael Nadal on his way to his maiden grand slam semi-final, Gonzalez, the tournament tenth seed showed no nerves against the experienced German who was attempting to progress past the semi final stage in Melbourne for the first time in his third attempt.

Gonzalez, the No. 10 seed, overpowered his 12th-seeded German opponent 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in 93 minutes to become only the second Chilean to reach the final of a major tennis championship after Marcelo Rios. The men’s final is scheduled Jan. 28.

Roger Federer owns a 9-0 record over the South American, winning their last meeting in the final at Basel in October, 2006.

It is not hard at all to pick who is going to be the new Australian Champion. But, would you gamble to guess what the score will be?
