Where is Powerball Jackpot played?

Powerball Jackpot

Powerball is played in 44 states and three jurisdictions across the USA and is one of the largest lotteries in the world, offering a starting jackpot of US$40 million. Powerball draws take place every Wednesday and Saturday night in Tallahassee, Florida, and the game is famous for regularly offering jackpots in excess of US$300 million due to frequent rollovers. The record Powerball jackpot stands at $1.58 billion, which was shared by three ticket holders from California, Florida and Tennessee in the draw on Wednesday 13th January 2016.

The Powerball lottery has the honour of having the highest jackpot prize in the world ever won by a single ticket – it is also the lottery that has paid out the highest jackpot to just one person. The biggest jackpot ever won on the US Powerball was a staggering $590.5 million, won by one lucky ticket holder in May 2013. The second-biggest jackpot snatched up, was an amazing $580 million which was won by two ticket holders in November 2012.

How to Play Powerball

Players must select five numbers from 1 to 69 and another Powerball number from 1 to 26 when they buy a ticket. In order to win the Powerball jackpot, players must match all five main balls plus the Powerball. In addition to the jackpot, there are eight further prize tiers offering set cash prizes for matching fewer numbers. The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.87.

Players can also add Power Play to their game for a small additional fee, which will increase all non-jackpot winnings.

The Power Play multiplier is drawn separately after the main game and offers players the chance to multiply winnings in the third to ninth prize tiers by between 2 and 5, depending on which Power Play number is drawn. In October 2015, a 10x Power Play multiplier was introduced in draws in which the jackpot is worth US$150 million or less. The second prize tier, which offers a set reward of US$1 million for matching five main numbers, is doubled to US$2 million for those who chose to add the feature to their game, regardless of the Power Play number drawn.

So if you buy the extra $1 Power Play add-on option, you still have a chance to double your Match 5 prize ($1 million jumps to $2 million), and you still have a chance to multiplier all lower prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, or 5X. But now, you also have a chance to multiply these lower prizes (bottom seven prize levels) by 10X whenever the jackpot is $150 million or less.

The Power Play multiplier is selected using a random number generator with weighted values for each multiplier option. For each draw there are 24-2X values; 13-3X values; 3-4X values; and 2-5X value.  When jackpots are below $150 Million, a 10X value is added.

How much it cost to play Powerball Jackpot

Powerball costs $2 for a single play for one drawing. To add the Power Play multiplier, it costs an additional $1 for each play. The American Powerball lottery makes use of two machines drawing two sets of numbers. In this way, it is similar to other lotteries like the Mega Millions and EuroMillions. Powerball players need to match five numbers from a possible 69 (these are the white numbers), and one number from a possible 26 (these are the red bonus ‘Powerballs’). If a player matches up all six numbers that have been drawn, they will win the jackpot. Second tier division winners have a $1 million prize to look forward to  and one does not even need to match all six numbers in order to become a millionaire with the US Powerball game.

The odds to win Powerball Jackpot

It is still pretty tough to win the Jackpot, which is one of the reasons it is known as one of the biggest jackpot games in the world today – the odds of claiming a single-ticket win of both the five numbers plus the red Powerball, currently stand at about 1 in 24.87. The game definitely has the ability to make you fabulously wealthy beyond your wildest dreams or imagination.

For some comparison, your chance of being struck by lightning in a year is about one in 960,000. But as lottery officials often note, you have no chance of winning if you don’t buy a ticket.

Some players feel they increase their odds of winning by pooling their money with co-workers, with a promise to split the winnings. Joining with colleagues and friends can increase the fun of playing, but the odds of winning are so tiny that adding 50 or 100 chances doesn’t matter much. Lottery officials recommend that if people pool their money, they put down rules in writing for splitting the prize, as it’s easy for misunderstandings to crop up when hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake.

Draws of Powerball Jackpot

Powerball lottery draws are held every Wednesday and Saturday at 22h59 Eastern Time and are broadcast live. The results of each lotto draw are not official until they are audited by an accounting firm. There are nine prize tiers on the Powerball Lottery, with approximate prizes ranging from $4 – $1,000,000.

How to claim the prize of Powerball jackpot in case of winner?

You can generally claim a prize of under $600 at any retailer in the state where you bought the ticket, but be advised that some retailers will not carry the cash needed to pay higher prizes. Sometimes, a convenience store that has safety concerns may not carry the cash. In a few places, there are “super retailers” that can pay up to $25,000. Look for a clerk wearing a cape and tights.

Each state lottery has its own central computer system. There are about seven different system platforms operated by three different vendors in a highly competitive market. The state lottery systems are not interconnected. As powerful and as fast as computers are, you might imagine the power and cost needed to develop a system in each state to record and store play numbers for the entire claim period for all states and that is always connected to every other state so each state is instantly aware of plays made and cashed. A system of transferring money back and forth between states would also have to be maintained as states cash each other’s tickets. While this system would be convenient for the rare player who travels, the vast majority of winning tickets are purchased by someone who is close to the lottery terminal where it was purchased. You do NOT have to cash the ticket at the same store, but you do have to cash the ticket in the same state. You can also claim any prize – and prizes over $600 – at the state lottery headquarters. You can even claim winning tickets by mail. Click here on a state at the map link to find the address and possibly a claim form
