On September 30th 2006 the US Senate passed the SAFE Port Act which also contains a section referred to as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (bill gambling internet) which has been signed into law by President Bush on Friday October 13th.

On November 10th 2008, Online casinos and poker rooms on the Microgaming Network will no longer accept new players from the United States.

The statement from Microgaming said, “Several of Microgaming’s licensees, who represent the majority of the U.S. business, last week decided that the current commercial uncertainty of investing in business from the United States no longer justified accepting new player registrations.” In addition, several Microgaming sites have elected not to allow players from the United States to play at all, as opposed to blocking just new registrations" ... Due to sanctions set by Rival Gaming, Rival Online Casinos will no longer be able to accept Canadian player. A decision was made to block Canadian players effective January 31, 2009.

On May 6, 2009, Barney Frank, a Democrat from Massachusetts, planned to introduce separate legislation seeking to delay implementation of the bill which effectively banned online gambling in the United States, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

Barney Frank wants to give the Treasury Department the authority to establish regulations and a licensing system for Internet gambling operators that would allow them to take bets from individuals in the United States.
